Course Syllabus
Introduction
The goal of this course is to introduce exercises based in multiphonics that will help you improve your tone, the flexibility of your embouchure, and your control over the clarion (notes above the break) and altissimo registers. Join Heather Roche, our Head of Clarinet at tonebase, as she reviews what multiphonics are, the harmonic series, and some brief tips on intonation of these chord-like pitches.
Magic fingering multiphonics
In this lesson, Heather breaks down some easy multiphonics that will help you get used to the feeling of playing them. She will guide you through the mastery of these five multiphonic fingerings with some “whistling” positions and how playing these multiphonics as long tones will help you build consistency in producing a sound.
Underblown clarion multiphonics
In this lesson, Heather will be helping you work through multiphonics that you’ve actually known when you first started playing the clarinet, even if you didn’t know you knew them at the time! Now, you will be playing them with purpose in order to develop the control of the clarion register.
Soft close dyad multiphonics
In this lesson, Heather will be teaching you how to play some of the most beautiful multiphonics possible on the clarinet, which will allow you to develop control and flexibility over your embouchure and air flow. This section is a jump in difficulty from the previous sections, so make sure you can execute those exercises before starting these!
Spectral multiphonics
These spectral multiphonics are some of the most challenging multiphonics, but they are great for improving your control over the altissimo register and very fun to play! Heather takes you through some air techniques and bugle call exercises, where you’ll learn to play the clarinet like a trumpet and improve the flexibility of your embouchure.
Conclusion
In the conclusion of this course, Heather reviews the helpfulness of multiphonics you’ve learned in this course. She also offers encouragement and suggestions for exploration with these multiphonics in warmups and playing beyond this course.
