Introduction
In this short lesson, Yoonah Kim provides some historical context for the work, which was written at the end of Poulenc's life.
I. Allegro Tristamente
This first movement has some fast alternating passages in different registers and Yoonah Kim is here to show you some great exercises for practicing them, as well as how to interpret the beautiful monotone lines in the middle section. She also shares why she loves the beautiful and slightly contradictory title!
II. Romanza
The melancholy second movement alternates plaintive low clarinet playing with dramatic sweeps into the clarion register and Yoonah will guide you in how to practice and interpret them all to great effect.
III. Allegro con Fuoco
We've made it to the third movement and it's full of thrills for clarinetist and listener alike. As usual, Yoonah helps you with phrasing and interpretation, and also discusses subjects like alternative altissimo fingerings as well as some good "cheats" for some of the low trills.
