Introduction
In the introduction, Anna Hashimoto explains the historical context of Saint-Saëns sonata, particularly how recent develpments in clarinet technology allowed Saint-Saëns to explore chromaticism on the clarinet in a way that wasn't possible before!
I. Allegretto
Anna's three key words for this movement - legato, line and tone - are the starting point for her lesson, going on to help you with the particular technical and musical challenges this movement poses, from the rocking triplet feel of the opening to the arpeggios that litter the movement as it progresses.
II. Allegro animato
Agility, lightness and flow are Anna's three key words for the second movement; here she emphasises the light articulation and leaping passages, in contrast with moving lines and beautiful phrasing. This is a fantastic movement, full of character perfectly suited to the clarinet!
III. Lento
Extremes, control and color are the focus in this movement, where Anna shows you how to think about phrasing when it comes to slow moving passages in the low register.
IV. Molto allegro
Anna's three key words for this final movement are excitement, swiftness and ease. Excitement is right: this thrilling finale to Saint-Saëns' wonderful sonata will challenge your technique but do not fear, Anna Hashimoto is here to teach you everything you need to know to tackle this last movement!
